Christening
(also known as Baptism)
People can be baptised (christened) at any age.
Babies and Young Children
It is more common for babies and young children to be baptised (christened). Baptism is a way to say thank you to God for your child, as well as committing yourself to trying to help your child live a life based on faith in Jesus Christ.
You may have many other reasons for wanting your child baptised: family tradition; a sense of doing right by your child and giving them the best start in life. All these are valid, but the welcome of your child into the family of God is what the church celebrates.
It is the first step of an amazing journey with God, parents, godparents, friends, family and the church. You do not have to have been christened yourself, and you do not have to have been a regular churchgoer.
You will need to choose Godparents for your child, who are people who have been baptised themselves and who will help your child learn about faith.
Young People and Adults
Some people choose to be baptised later in life – often when they have begun to believe in Jesus for themselves. There is no age limit for baptism!
